For over forty years, Berlin in early November has been a
capital city of jazz. The Berlin Jazz Festival is a world renowned
festival that presents all the manifold and diverse styles of
jazz. The full and varied programme is equally traditional and
progressive, and has tended to focus in particular on big
bands and large ensembles. This four-day »marathon of jazz«
also sounds the spectacular final chord of each year in Berlin’s
jazz calendar.
Alongside the big American stars the Berlin Jazz Festival also
increasingly presents artists from all over the world, artists
whose music centres on crossing the borders between local
folk traditions and global sounds and trends. In recent years
the festival has set regional focuses and has thereby gained
a reputation as a forum of European jazz.
The media partners ARD and Deutschlandradio document
the festival in concert recordings from all the various stages
across the city, with the Haus der Berliner Festspiele as the
focal point of the festival.
